Air Force Drops Airborne Laser

Latest news about an old high tech military project I covered here before (https://elloborojo.wordpress.com/2010/06/27/gunship-lasers-developed-in-new-mexico/). Now the Airborne Laser is being discontinued. However I doubt the money saved will be going into anything like feeding the poor.  Not to mention the money spent already that was just wasted on research and development.

From (http://www.krqe.com/dpp/military/new_mexico/air-force-drops-airborne-laser-project):

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) – The Pentagon has mothballed a laser-equipped missile defense aircraft after more than 15 years of development.

The Missile Defense Agency announced this month that the Airborne Laser Test Bed – a Boeing 747 mounted with a high-energy laser – is being placed in long-term storage at an Arizona Air Force base. It was based at Edwards Air Force Base in the Southern California desert.

Agency spokeswoman Debra Christman tells the Los Angeles Times that the program didn’t have enough money to keep the jumbo jet flying.

The agency says the program, which cost about $5 billion, did complete objectives by successfully knocking down a test missile in flight off the Southern California coast in 2010.

That year, then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the concept was fatally flawed.

Some of the research work supporting the project was conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque.

About elloborojo

Okay, as the subtitle states, this is a notebook from what I call a New Mexico diaspora (look up diaspora if you are asking). I was a former resident of New Mexico, now living elsewhere, but New Mexico is still my homeland. To get more in touch with your homeland one must be away from it. This is my attempt to understand it. I was a former anti-militarism activist in the Albuquerque area. Still believe that United Snakes militarism is the greatest threat to the world, as do the majority of the worlds population. Uncovered much information about the ties in New Mexico, but never processed it all. This blog is an attempt to do that. Also hope it may come of use to others with similar interests.
