REQUESTING THE COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF PRIVATIZING THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF LAW.
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico school of law has a faculty of thirty and a student body of about three hundred forty, providing one of the smallest faculty-student ratios in the country, but has a budget of about five million one hundred thousand dollars ($5,100,000); and
WHEREAS, the concept of converting publicly operated schools to privately operated schools is gaining acceptance nationwide;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the commission on higher education study the feasibility, implications and potential savings and costs to the state and its taxpayers of privatizing the university of New Mexico school of law; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the commission report its findings to the appropriate interim committee by November 1, 1999; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the executive director of the commission on higher education.
